Yola is the capital city and administrative center of the Adamawa State in Nigeria and is located on the banks of the Benue River. It was founded in 1841 and is situated so that the Shebshi Mountains are on the South and the Mandara Mountains are on the North and is also the gateway to the Mambila Plateau and the Gashaka Gumpti Nature Reserve.
Yola is split into two parts. The old town of Yola where the Lamido resides is the traditional city but the new city of Jimeta, about 5 km to the North West is the administrative and commercial centre. Among its natural resources are cassava, maize, fish, wheat, bananas, sugar cane, tomatoes, yams and many more.
Yola is one of the busiest and most prosperous cities in Nigeria. Jimeta has a modern zoo where visitors can see a fairly diverse number of animals, and a number of mosques and cathedral. There is also the well known Three Sisters Hill and several historical landmarks in and around the city including the Yola bridge across the River Benue.
Yola Airport is served by regular flights to Abuja and Lagos provided by Arik Airlines and IRS Airlines. IRS Airlines additionally offer connections to Maiduguri from Yola. Passengers travelling to and from other destinations within Nigeria have a choice of daily connecting flights from Abuja and Lagos to the outlying areas of Nigeria.
